Rosabeth Moss Kanter
Rosabeth Moss Kanter is an internationally known business leader, best-selling author, and advocate for change in business and government. She holds the Class of 1960 Chair as Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. Her latest book World Class: Thriving Locally in the Global Economy, about the impact of globalization on businesses, workplaces, and communities, shows how "collaborative advantage" produces success in the new economy. In July 1997 a new book, Rosabeth Moss Kanter on the Frontiers of Management appeared in bookstores.
She is also the author of When Giants Learn to Dance: Mastering the Challenges of Strategy, Management and Careers in the 1990s (1989), which received the Johnson, Smith & Knisely Award for New Perspectives on Executive Leadership and was translated into 10 languages. Other books include The Challenge of Organisational Change (1992), The Change Masters: Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the American Corporation (1983) and Men and Women of the Corporation (1977;reissued 1993), winner of the C.Wright Mills Award for the year's best book on social issues. She has published 12 books in total and over 150 major articles. "Best article" awards include a McKinsey Award from the Harvard Business Review.
Before joining the Harvard Business School faculty, Professor Kanter taught at Brandeis and Harvard Universities (1967-1977) and at Yale University (1977-1986). She was also a Fellow in Law and Social Sciences and a Visiting Scholar at Harvard Law School. She co-founded Goodmeasure, Inc., a consulting firm specialising in managing change, serving as Chairman since 1977 and producing A Tale of "O": On Being Different, one of the world's best-selling videos on workplace diversity. From 1989-1992 Professor Kanter was also Editor of the Harvard Business Review, a finalist for a National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 1991.
Dr. Kanter has received numerous national honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, 18 honorary doctoral degrees, and several "Woman of the Year" awards. She has been a consultant to major corporations world-wide including Bell Atlantic, Quaker Oats, and BankBoston in the U.S., Northern Telecom in Canada, Volvo and Novartis in Europe, and San Miquel in Asia. She has served on government commissions on economic issues, including innovation and entrepreneurship, employee involvement, and take-over laws, and on the Board of Overseers for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. She co-chairs the Massachusetts Governor's task force on international trade. She is also on the boards of public interest organisations such as City Year, the American Center for Quality and Productivity, and the Economic Policy Institute in Washington, and is a Fellow of the World Economic Forum and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
